Learning and fun are not mutually exclusive. We wish to ensure that the boundaries that are created are led by the desire of the children and their interaction, rather than prescribed by adults wanting to meet deadlines and timetables – a descriptive not prescriptive environment.
We use the term “owned choice” to describe how children (and adults) can use the space available to them, accessing the spaces freely, i.e. when they want to/choose to, encouraging them to spend time in different zones, exploring and developing their understanding of the resources, activity and world around them.
We understand our primary audience:
- Can not see more than red, white and black until they are six months old
- Can not sit up unaided until six – nine months old
- Are normally under 1 meter high for the four years they might be with us
- Need to be fed carefully as they are developing their tastes for life
- Need exercise and stimulation that is appropriate to them
- Will develop 70% of their brain potential by the time they are 4 years old
So, children are not really fussed about much of what is considered important as adults. Their needs are more about social and physical opportunity:
INDOORwith light and airy spaces to service their differing needs:
- sleeping & resting
- eating & drinking
- stretching & dancing
- concentrating & thinking
- exploring & discovering
- relaxing & being cuddled
- making friends & being independent ……
OUTDOOR is great and vital for developing an understanding and appreciation of their natural surroundings:
- constantly accessible, no matter what the weather
- exploring & experimenting
- planting & growing
- smelling & touching
- climbing & rolling
- running & jumping
- digging & building ……
